While you may think a pocket knife is a pocket knife, New West Knifeworks is aiming to change your mind with the Saddleback Glory. As soon as I saw this folding knife, its unique design immediately caught my attention. I got my hands on it for a closer look and to help you decide if it can replace your current EDC.

Pros

Made in the USA

High-end CPM S35VN steel blade

Titanium frame and clip

Cons

Out of range of some budgets

NEW WEST KNIFEWORKS SADDLEBACK GLORY POCKET KNIFE BLADE

Blade length: 2 3/4 inches

Total length: 7 1/8 inches

Blade thickness: 0.015 inches

Spine thickness: 0.095 inches

Steel: CPM S35VN

New West Knifeworks starts strong, using CPM S35VN steel for the blade. This blend is known for its durability and easy maintenance, even compared to the ever-popular S30V steel. It offers increased toughness and chipping resistance, which is ideal for an EDC knife that’s going to see plenty of action.

Sharpened to a drop point with a plain, slightly contoured edge, it gives you a nice surface area for slicing and a solid piercing tip.

For deployment, the Saddleback Glory knife features a flipper that enables smooth, one-handed opening. The blade measures 2.75 inches in length, making it a good size for everyday tasks. Altogether, the knife measures 7 1/8 inches when fully open.

The handle is where this knife really stands out. I reviewed the Ironwood and Red Liner colorway, which, as the name suggests, uses ironwood for the handle. I really love the dark, polished finish that allows you to see the natural wood grains.

Aside from Ironwood handles, you can also find the Saddleback Glory knife with either a G10 or carbon fiber handle. Both materials are known for their durability, so you surely can’t go wrong no matter which style you choose.

A titanium frame and pocket clip tie the whole piece together, ensuring a tough, durable, yet lightweight design.

This knife is a premium model, and its price tag reflects the design that went into it. The base Saddleback Glory model retails for $470, and the price gets up to $510 depending on your choice of handle material. The model I am reviewing is the Ironwood and Red Liner colorway, which retails for $510. You can find the entire collection directly from New West Knifeworks.

If you’re looking for a customizable option, you can also add laser-engraved text for an additional charge.

THE BOTTOM LINE

It’s not common that a product makes our whole team say, “wow!” but the Saddleback Glory folding knife did just that. This knife has a wide range of appeal, between its quality construction, customizability, and Made-in-the-USA dependability. While the price point may be restricting for some, the Saddleback Glory folding knife is a great EDC option for those looking for a step up from Grandpa’s ol’ reliable.

Few things are better than putting together a fishing kit that gets the job done well without absolutely destroying your wallet. Redington has long been known to accomplish just that task.

The brand has been making fly fishing gear and equipment since 1992. With a focus on quality performance at a manageable price point, Redington aims to be both “adventurous and approachable,” opening the door to fly fishing to new and seasoned anglers alike.

My first foray into the Redington brand was with the Redington Grande Reel neatly paired with its Crux Rod. I picked up this combination on the brand’s recommendation for one of my first steelheading adventures on the north shore in Minnesota.

I needed a rod with a stiff rod tip and enough connectivity to feel the “take” of steelhead in deep pools. Steelhead are notorious for laborious fights and taking line. I wanted a reel with plenty of backing capacity and a simple drag-knob system for adjustments on the fly.

So, did this budget-friendly kit measure up to the heavy-duty task?

In short: The Redington Grande reel and Crux rod combo has been my choice fly fishing setup for over five seasons. Affordable and performance-driven, this setup has exceeded my expectations in every fishing adventure I’ve thrown at it. It’s just never let me down.

Overview: The Grande Reel

Built fully anodized with machined aluminum, the Grande reel is made for fighting big fish without compromise. Redington added a fully sealed “super torque” carbon fiber drag system that provides smooth drag and strength to wear out big fish in nearly any condition.

The reel’s oversized drag knob and V-spool design offer easy adjustments and increased line capacity, giving you peace of mind while your next PB is running downstream.

The reel’s rim is large, making it easy to apply pressure to frenzied fish while adding to overall spool rigidity. The brand also boasts that the optimized reel foot position makes it easy to position the true center of gravity to prevent rod twist. As a bonus, it is simple to convert between left or right-hand retrieve.

Overall, the tough construction and dependable drag performance make this reel ideal for handling just about anything you throw at it in freshwater and saltwater environments. And with a lifetime warranty, that can’t be beat.

Overview: The Crux Rod

A fast-action rod built with Redington’s Line Speed Taper, the Crux is made for confident delivery of short to mid-range casts. There are two big points to the Crux: the “connectivity” while in use and the new and improved grip.

Starting with the rod itself, Redington added a stiffer tip to reduce unwanted vibration while increasing connectivity between the tip, middle, and lower section of the rod to give the user an all-around superior feel. For a big fish rod, I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how much I can feel the little bumps and taps as my bait bounces along the bottom of a deep pool.

(Photo/Zach Burton)

The Crux was the first rod that Redington added its “Angled Key Grip” to, with a more dense and precompressed cork material that increased durability and sensitivity while “reducing hand fatigue.” While I can’t say factually that the grip has decreased my hand fatigue while casting, I can say confidently that the grip is comfortable even when fishing from sunrise to sundown.

A fully anodized reel seat with built-in hook keepers and a premium olive matte finish round out the feature list of the Crux.

Over the last few years, I’ve taken the Redington Grande and Crux on many fly-fishing adventures. I’ve fished everything from Great Lakes Steelhead and Pink Salmon to Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike.

And while I haven’t had a chance to fish saltwater yet, I am confident this setup will be equally impressive there. With that in mind, one of my favorite things about this setup is its versatility.

The Crux is responsive enough to cast and fish in a nuanced way — feeling for light “takes” on the bottom of a hole in a river — while remaining stiff enough to wear out even the toughest fish. The Grande has plenty of room for backing, and I’ve swapped between a traditional fly line setup with a floating line over to a 100% mono setup for Steeleading where getting the bait to the the bottom of the pool rapidly is crucial. The Crux never missed a beat.

(Photo/Zach Burton)

Beyond that, I’ve taken this rod and reel on dozens of road trips, backpacking adventures, flights, and more, and I’ve never had any issues with broken or worn-down parts. It’s amazing that Redington offers a lifetime warranty on both products, but I love the fact that I’ve never even had to think about that even more.

When you combine these things and consider the pricepoint to comparable setups — this is a no-brainer. Plus, I really dig the aesthetic. Maybe that doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things, but hey. If I’m going to spend money on quality gear, I want it to look cool, too.

A Winning Combination

(Photo/Zach Burton)

There’s a lot to love about this setup. First, I’ve found it to be very versatile across a multitude of fishing types and environments. I feel as comfortable fishing lakes for big smallmouth bass as I do dragging deep river pools for Great Lakes Steelhead.

The line-speed taper makes middle-distance casting a breeze and translates well to long-distance casts. The grip is comfortable and makes long days of casting more manageable — offsetting some of the weight of the overall combination. I love that the drag is sealed on the reel, making it easy to fish with peace of mind.

Room for Improvement

It goes without saying that I am a fan of this setup. That being said, there are a few areas that could be improved. First, I find it lacking in short-range casting. The rod lacks a sense of finesse, and I’ve found it difficult to cast accurately under 25 feet.

The weight of the reel is another point of contention and adds to a less-than-ideal swing weight. While these aren’t deal-breakers for me by any means, they are worth considering.

Final Thoughts on the Grande & Crux Combo

This rod and reel duo provides the performance and durability I need and has been my go-to for dozens of adventures. Packed with features and thoughtful design elements, I continue to reach for this setup whenever there is large fish potential and I need to bring out the big guns.

It should come as no surprise that I highly recommend the Redington Grande and Crux — there is a reason I’ve been sticking to the same setup for several years. These tools provide me with everything I need and nothing I don’t. Are there new innovations and lighter-weight options available? Of course.

However, you won’t find a better value that’s packed with features and backed with a lifetime warranty. And sometimes, the gear you already have and know well is worth more than getting your hands on the latest and greatest.

This spring, you may want to ditch the laces on your next trail run. Teva, the sandal brand known best in the last few years for its festival presence and lifestyle lean, returns to its performance roots with the launch of what it calls the world’s first high-performance trail running sandal — and I received a pair for a first look.

The minds at Teva worked for the last 2 years to design a trail-made sandal that combined the necessary elements for running on dirt: a protective and breathable upper, a nylon plate that could deliver propulsion and power, and a chunky, comfortable foam that maintained support over punchy trail.

I tested an early pair of the new Aventrail sandals with the Teva team in California to see how they stacked up to the challenge.

If you’re into running trails and sick of standard shoes, this new Teva Running Aventrail Sandal may be for you. But before you get too excited, there are some caveats.

In short: The Aventrail is comfortable, but I have doubts regarding its ability to go the distance. While I wouldn’t recommend the Aventrail for serious or consistent trail runners, I do see great value in an underlooked aspect of the sandals. It stands as a great do-it-all camp shoe. Having one (lightweight) sandal that can hike, run, and lounge is hard to come by, and in this regard, Teva knocked it out of the park. (Bonus points for the Aventrail’s extremely unique look, which will garner attention on and off the trail.)

So, a Trail Running … Sandal?

At first glance, this running sandal appears to deliver on all of its design missions, and more. The perforated, engineered upper is comfortable and breathable with or without socks (and made with Repreve recycled materials, to boot).

The Spider Rubber outsole, a proprietary design from Teva, feels grippy enough. And paired with the Hyper-Comf foam in the midsole (another proprietary Teva material), it lends enough balance, support, and stability to take on most terrain. The Aventrail weighs in at 11.9 ounces for men, 9.7 ounces for women, and features a 6mm drop and W strapping for secure foot lockdown.

While it’s true that one could technically run in any sandal on the trail if they so choose, the Aventrail’s design was expressly inspired by trail objectives. It’s not intended to be a hybrid of any sort.

While I’ve only run in the Aventrail a handful of times, I have some noteworthy first impressions. The sandal’s proprietary foam lives up to its name — it is indeed comfy and supremely squishy — but that comfort comes at the cost of responsiveness.

By the end of my first 5-mile run, I felt like I was sinking into the sandals rather than bouncing off the compacted dirt trail. This feeling of being sucked into the foam was exponentially more powerful when I arrived at the last stretch of my run, which was paved.

The Aventrail’s foam is great for hikes, walking around camp, and short runs, but it’s also very chunky. The 33.5mm stack in the heel and 27.5mm in the toe is average, but feels like a lot more thanks to the sandal’s construction.

In closed-toed shoes, these specs wouldn’t elicit a second glance, but with the partially exposed design of the Aventrail, I found my feet rolling a lot more often as I navigated rock gardens, tree roots, or down gravel-filled descents.

I learned to trust this sandal and its unique construction, but be aware that the proprietary grip outsole isn’t anything close to its Vibram competition.

(Photo/Hayley Helms)

My favorite aspect of the Aventrail is its engineered knit upper, which counter-balanced the extra Hyper-Comf foam and left me with a sense of stability I was craving on the trail. The perforation in the upper lends breathability, along with its cut-outs, and even in socks, my feet never felt hot (or developed hot spots, another blessing).

Takeaways

Overall, the “first ever” trail running sandal from Teva left a good impression on me — and the sense that this is just the beginning of the brand’s foray back into performance-oriented footwear.

It’s not a fit for serious runners logging big miles. But for those who appreciate the comfort of open-toe footwear, and want a versatile, rugged option that performs decently well, the Aventrail is a solid step up from the traditional sandal.

You might not sing as well as you think in the car or shower. That’s because a lot of things sound good until you put it next to something that sounds objectively better. Such is the case with portable Bluetooth speakers, which often sound good for their size. But how good is a completely relative matter.

Our experts have been writing about speakers, headphones, earbuds, and other audio products for over a quarter century. During that time, both the audio quality and battery life of personal audio products have improved by leaps and bounds. In fact, today, we’re blessed with high-resolution audio on the go that — dare we say — may even rival vinyl.

Specifically for this buyer’s guide, we conducted online research and identified 25-plus portable Bluetooth speakers ranging in price from $40 to $600. (We might’ve gone just a bit overboard in the initial research, all in the name of being thorough.) After careful consideration, we narrowed down the candidates to a more manageable group that we then tested, compared, and contrasted under real-world conditions.

Following up on my best 12-inch miter saw reviews article, I wanted to put together a more comprehensive guide to the best miter saws…period.

While cordless tools may rule the roost in many circles, miter saws largely remain popular as corded solutions. Still, newer cordless models seem like they may start gaining mainstream popularity. They certainly are in the PTR Shop!

I’ve reviewed, tested, and “driven” dozens of miter saws over the years. Choosing the best miter saw means looking at performance & power, cut quality, accuracy, features, and value. As usual, I gathered together a handful of professionals to help me test and evaluate these tools so I could make some solid recommendations for various use cases.

Unlike your kid’s Little League team, not everybody gets a trophy. If I recommend a miter saw here, it means I (and Pro Tool Reviews) really do recommend it. Just pay attention to the applications and purposes suggested along the way.

OUR TOP PICKS

Best Overall: Bosch GCM12SD Axial Glide

Best Cordless: Bosch GCM18V-12GDCN14

Best for Woodworking: Festool Kapex KS 120 REB

Best 10-inch: Milwaukee M18 FUEL 2734-21

Best Compact: Bosch CM8S

Best for the Money: DeWalt DWS779 15A 12-inch

Best for Homeowners: Ryobi TSS702

Best for Metal Cutting: Skilsaw SPT62MTC-22 Dry Cut

The Bosch GCM12SD Axial Glide miter saw provided the smoothest cutting we’d ever experienced thanks in large part to its axial glide system rather than standard rails.

Our best compound miter saw launched way back in 2010. It still beats nearly every other saw we’ve used for tall standing crown cuts and vertical base clearance. With more clearance than the Festool Kapex KS 120 REB, this saw weighs a bit more but also costs $1000 less. You can also find it in both corded and cordless configurations.

When making this recommendation, we took into account our entire catalog of sliding compound miter saw reviews. The $599 Bosch Axial Glide remains one of the most powerful saws with the best cut quality. Since it also allows for some of the highest trim clearances across the back fence it reigns as the best dual compound miter saw.

The Bosch ProFactor 18V cordless 12-inch miter saw is an attention-grabber thanks to its Axial Glide sliding system. However, its performance and accuracy are what makes it a keeper. If you’re in the market for a cordless miter saw, we highly recommend giving Bosch’s ProFactor line a shot.

Without the battery, the saw weighs 59.3 pounds, which isn’t bad at all for a 12-inch dual bevel sliding miter saw. Still, if you’re going to take this to the jobsite (which is why you want a cordless saw in the first place!), we recommend using a rolling stand to make it easier on you. This saw features four speed modes (including “Eco”) which gives you a way to add additional runtime if needed when cutting non-demanding materials. Cutting is smooth and quick, and I noticed very little deflection on the blade.

Another great feature of this tool is the ability to position it right up against the wall of your shop. The mechanism requires no back clearance, helping you reclaim a lot of space that would otherwise be wasted. There aren’t a ton of quality cordless 12-inch miter saws on the market, and Bosch priced this one pretty competitively. Without a battery and charger, it runs $769. Adding the charger and 8Ah Core18V ProFactor battery brings it up to $929.

We find it hard to overstate the incredible refinement of the Festool Kapex KS 120 REB miter saw. The “REB” model only tweaks minor details on the popular and enduring Kapex KS 120 EB saw.

This 10-1/4 inch miter saw has features you won’t see anywhere else. The rail-forward design lets you run the saw against a wall in your workshop. Kapex claims as much as 91% dust collection using the dust hood. You also get incredible clearance off the back fence. In the nested position, you can cut crown molding up to 6-5/8 inches. Vertically, you can cut trim up to 4-3/4 inches.

Festool also does other things that just make a lot of sense. They give you a dual laser cut line, for example. They also made the base of the saw exactly the height of a Systainer 1. That means you can use your Systainers as material supports when cutting.

Having used this saw, I simply find it smooth, powerful, and nearly unmatched. It’s clearly the best miter saw for woodworking by a long shot unless you want to triple the price and look at commercial solutions.

You get integrated “wings” off the table for extended support. The fence measured square out of the box, and you get excellent crosscut depth.

All of the slide, bevel, and miter adjustments work smoothly—we like the oversized bevel lock on the rear of the saw.
Ever check out a “review” site and you can’t tell if they actually tested the product or if they’re just “recommending” the Amazon top sellers? That’s not us. We won’t recommend anything unless we’d use it ourselves, and we don’t care who the primary retailer is. It’s all about giving you a legitimate recommendation and our honest opinion of each product.

Since 2008, Pro Tool Reviews has provided in-depth tool reviews, buying guides, how-to articles, and industry news in the construction and lawn care industries. We focus on professionals in the trades and our writers have the skills and experience to know whether a tool or accessory will hold up on the jobsite.

Each year, we bring in and review more than 250 individual products. Additionally, our team will put their hands on hundreds more tools at media events and trade shows throughout the year. If I recommend a work boot, that means I’d wear it myself (and perhaps I or one of our staff already does!)

WHAT WE LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A MITER SAW

What You Do for a Living Affects Your Choices

I actually wrote a very comprehensive guide on what to look for when buying a miter saw. Things to consider include the type of work you intend to do. Are you a carpenter? Do you work primarily on trim or decking materials? The type of work you do determines the materials likely to hit that miter saw table and fence. Every item below flows from this question. Start with your desired applications and go from there.

Blade Size Affects Maximum Vertical Cuts

Before much else, look at the expected clearances you want to have when cutting materials like trim—particularly crown and baseboard. If you frequently cut taller trim, you likely want a saw that handles those types of cuts against the fence. Typically, a 12-inch miter saw gives you way more clearance than saws with smaller blades.

Vertical cuts are important for many carpenters because it eliminates a lot of the “math” associated with making a flat compound miter cut. With a vertical cut on crown or base molding, you simply measure your angle, divide by two, and make your cut. It will line up perfectly every time.

Also, I’ve found excellent clearance on some 10-inch miter saws, so your total cut capacity depends on several factors. The biggest one comes next…

Belt Drive, Worm Drive, or Direct Drive

While I can’t say for certain that either of these technologies always beats the others, one thing stands out. Across the board, belt drive saws cut more smoothly in terms of how they feel. They can also affect the clearance on the back fence. The design of a miter saw’s belt drive or gear drive determines whether or not it has impressive cutting height off the back of the blade. Notably, DeWalt’s vertical belt design seems to offer some of the highest cut capacities on the market.

On the other hand, direct and worm-drive miter saws tend to be more powerful on thick and dense material. If you’re cutting 45º miters in 4 x 6 PT for a pergola, you’ll notice you can power through the cut much more confidently.

Sliding Miter or Chop Saw?

The type of miter saw you buy also affects portability and functionality simultaneously. A basic chop saw, for example, can give you miter and bevel cuts in all directions but may only cut up to a 2×6 at 90 degrees. A sliding miter saw can cut up to a 2×12 or even a 2×14, depending upon your choice of setup.

That same chop saw also likely weighs a whole lot less than a comparable sliding miter with the same size blade. Take all these things into consideration before you take the plunge.

In general, I’d almost always choose a smaller sliding miter saw over a larger fixed chop saw. An exception would be in a production capacity where you know exactly what the tool needs to do every day.

Corded or Cordless Miter Saw?

The choice of a corded or cordless miter saw gets harder and harder each year. Some manufacturers, like Bosch and Makita, have released saws in both corded and cordless formats—saws that remain identical in all other features. Other companies, like Metabo HPT and Flex, have cordless miter saws with battery adapters that can connect you to 120V AC power.

Believe it or not, the newest cordless miter saws are matching their corded counterparts in power. If you find yourself looking at newer models, you no longer need to worry about premium models not being able to make the cut.

Typically, quality cordless miter saws cost a lot more than their corded counterparts—often significantly more. But you can’t beat the convenience of battery power when it’s hard to find an outlet. Battery-powered miter saws have also increased run-time significantly in the past 5 years. Using 2x4s as a reference, we’re now seeing hundreds of cuts on a single charge.

Cut Line Indicators

Some saws lack any sort of cut line indicator while others use a laser or LED. The LED-style cut line indicator works better than any other. It uses an LED light (or two) positioned just above the blade. Since it follows the blade down and hits both sides, it produces an exact shadow line where the blade cuts the wood.

The shadow-cut LED works perfectly, never needs to be adjusted, and functions on all blade types. It also works in broad daylight! It doesn’t even matter if you switch to a thin-kerf blade. The shadow never lies, and you always have an accurate “mark” for your cut. Seriously, it’s not my #1 must-have, but I hope all manufacturers switch to an LED shadow cut line system soon. Close to this is the Kapex dual laser system, but I still prefer a shadow cut line for daytime visibility.

Front vs Rear Controls and Clearance

Another thing I love about some miter saws has to do with up-front controls. Up-front controls reduce the need to reach around to make a bevel cut. All miter saws include front controls for mitering, of course. Adding a front bevel control steps up the saw to a new level of convenience. Very “worth it” if you do a ton of beveled cuts.

If you find a saw that combines front controls and zero clearance at the back, it’s a big win. There are systems, both with and without rails, that don’t require any part of the saw to extend behind it as you slide the blade. You can put it right up against the wall, and the saw takes up less of your valuable workspace.

Features to Look For

Soft start motor to avoid that “jump” when you pull the trigger

LED cut line indicator*

Makita 40V Max XGT 12-in Dual-Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw GSL04M1
The GSL04M1 is a powerful but expensive full-size Pro miter saw with upfront controls and the capacity to cut 3-5/8 x 15 in at 90° and 8-in nested crown. Equipped with a direct drive system, this model delivers blade speeds of up to 3,600 RPM. And, no doubt, this tool is a truly 21st-century device thanks to its Auto-start Wireless System. This technology makes use of Bluetooth for wireless communication between the tool and dust extractor.

Using electric bikes for bucks, bulls, and long beards is a great way to leave the crowds behind and slip in tight on game. When I lived in Montana (before electric bikes became a thing for hunting), I bought a mountain bike to help me reach distant spots more efficiently and with less effort. In most situations, it worked well enough. But thanks to the switchbacks and endless inclines, I spent more time pushing my bike uphill than riding it. Fortunately for my quads, those days are over.

Over the past decade, the electric bike market has boomed. Now, there are options that vary in size, power, and budget to accommodate most hunters. If you’re looking for efficient travel to your hunting spots, the best electric bikes for hunting can save you time and energy this season.

The Apex Pro is incredibly smooth for a powerful and fast e-bike. In first gear on unlimited mode, I did 13 mph up a steep hill and hit 25 mph on flat ground. When I hit those 20+mph speeds, I felt no wobbling and remained in control. The brakes were quiet and responsive throughout six months of use. The seat is comfortable for long rides, and overall the ride is luxurious.

The battery lasted an average of 20 miles for me, which is under the stated range. That could be because I was often pulling a trailer up hills. Regardless, I’d suggest an extra battery if you plan to cover more ground than 20 miles, just to be safe.

If you’re looking at an e-bike a QuietKat should be at the top of your list for one reason: Variable Output Technology. Their VPO allows you to adjust the bike’s power output to be in compliance with class 1, 2, or 3 e-bike laws. You can also put the bike on unlimited power for private land use.

In my opinion, the Apex Pro is the best electric bike for hunting available, and it’s priced like a premium bike. If you’re looking for something that has a lot of the power and features of the Apex Pro, but is about $2,000 cheaper, check out the Ranger. It has a 1,000 watt hub-drive motor with VPO technology and offers a lot of value for the dollar. —Scott Einsmann, gear editor

Cons

Heavier than other ebikes

Not rideable on non-motorized trails

The UBCO 2×2 Hunt isn’t really an electric bicycle. It’s more like a mini electric dirt bike. This mean machine has a max speed of 40 mph, it weighs 156 pounds, and there are no pedals. If you’re hunting private lands or public lands where motorized vehicles are allowed, this just might be the best all-around best electric bike for hunting. With its max range of 75 miles, it will have you covered for almost any hunt imaginable. The 330-pound max carrying capacity is enough to get most hunters and their meat out in one pull. It has a variety of rack options and Molle side panels for strapping on gear and guns (though while field testing my bike I left all the racks and attachments off to keep it as streamlined as possible). And at $6,500, it’s not much more expensive than other top-end electric bikes in this review. With its 2-wheel drive (1000 watt hub motors on the rear and front) and 3.1 kWh battery, it’s a much more powerful machine all-around.

I field tested the UBCO bike during the 2023 hunting season and found it to be an absolute joy to ride. It was super intuitive and I felt confident cruising over a variety of terrains. I used the bike to exercise my bird dog down dirt roads around my house and was impressed by the bike’s get-up-and-go and overall speed. I also used the UBCO bike to access stands and set trail cameras on a private deer hunting property in Wisconsin. It was here that I tested the bike on mud, snow, hills, and rock. The 2-wheel drive was essential. The only place the bike struggled a bit was on frozen or slick ground. However I had no problem riding the bike down trails and through fields at a slow, stealthy pace. Stealth, afterall, is the real benefit of an ebike while hunting. You can slip into setups much more quietly than you can with a four wheeler, or even while walking. Plus, your feet never touch the ground so you leave less of a scent trail. At low speeds I found the bike to be essentially silent. At higher speeds (15 mph or more) there is a high-pitched whine of the electric motor but it is exponentially quieter than any gas-powered vehicle.

There are only two negatives I can see with this bike when compared to pedal-style e-bikes. First, the UBCO is much heavier. All e-bikes are heavy, but this one is too heavy to simply toss onto a bike rack. So, you’ll want to have a plan for transporting the bike. I simply used a ramp to roll it into the bed of my pickup truck. Second, it’s a motorized vehicle, so you can’t legally ride it on non-motorized trails. This might be a deal breaker for some backcountry hunters, but it’s inconsequential for private land hunters or those who don’t need to ride on public non-motorized trails. More and more private land hunters are getting into the electric bike trend for the stealth that the machines offer. And for that crowd, one of the best options is the UBCO hunt. —Alex Robinson

Best for Load Hauling: Backcou Mule

Why It Made the Cut: This versatile and powerful electric bike can handle most terrains you throw at it, and the smart torque sensing Bafang motor, which toggles between 750 and 1,000 continuous watts, stays within all three power classifications of e-bike laws.

Key Features

Motor: 1000W Bafang Ultra Mid-Drive Motor (ability to change to 750W)

Battery: 48v 17.5ah, 19.2ah, 21ah, or 25ah

Range: Up to 50+ miles per charge

Load Capacity: 300 pounds

Gearing: 9-speed

Weight: 68 pounds

Tire Size: 26×4.0 (Mule & Mule ST 26-inch), 24×4.0 (Mule ST 24-inch)

Throttle: Left side thumb throttle

Pros

Multiple power options

Walk Assist mode for stability and control at your side

Rear rack for storage

Carries heavy loads

Cons

Hefty price tag

This bike is named the Mule for a reason. It has the power and performance to make things happen, whether you’re in the woods or on the mountain. It all starts with the Bafang ultra mid-drive motor, a standard among powerful e-bikes. It has plenty of power to climb anything you can keep traction on, and with 160NM of torque, there’s no stopping this beast. Features like Walk Assist make a world of difference after a successful hunt when you have a heavy load strapped to your bike.

I learned from the Backcou team that the smart motor allows the bike to react to the rider’s output. This means that the speed, cadence, shift, brake, and torque sensors provide continuous feedback from the rider to the motor, which delivers the right amount of controls and speed when you’re riding. This creates an even, smooth ride from front to back. These features do come with a hefty price tag, but if you want to maximize your time in the woods or on the mountain, the time you save on this electric bike might justify it for you.

Best for Long Distances: Rambo Megatron

Why It Made the Cut: With dual batteries, dual hub motors, and all-wheel-drive performance, this bike is built to reach those tough-to-get spots and handle rugged terrain.

Key Features

Motor: Bafang 1000w Hub Motor x2

Battery: Dual Samsung 48v 17ah

Range: 80 miles per charge

Size: 19.7 inches (medium)

Load Capacity: 300 pounds

Weight: 77 pounds

Tire: Maxxis Minion 26 x 4.8 inches

Throttle: Thumb

Pros

Plenty of battery

Dual motor for powering up hills

On-demand drive change ability

Full color display is easy to read, even in full sunlight

Solid brake system

Less physical output required by rider

Cons

Heavier than most other bikes

Not a bike you want to have to pedal

All-wheel-drive eats up batteries quick

Hefty price tag

The Megatron is the bike for long distances or rugged terrain. With dual batteries, it delivers more juice than most competitors. Though it’s an all-wheel-drive bike, you can easily switch to front or rear wheel drive on easy rides, which is more than enough for most situations. The all-wheel-drive option is nice, but it will eat your batteries much faster, so I recommend saving it for those times when you really need it.

Its huge 80-mile battery range means you don’t have to worry about making it back to camp. At 77 pounds, the Megatron is considerably heavier than most other e-bikes. However, with all the onboard power, it’s no problem when you’re cruising down the trail. You’ll likely only notice the weight when you load it into your truck or bike rack. And since it’s a single speed, you definitely won’t want to pedal this thing out of the woods should your batteries ever run out of juice.

Why It Made the Cut: Whether you need to haul more gear or meat, QuietKat has plenty of accessories and add-on options that make this the perfect rig for hauling more equipment in and out of the woods.

Plenty of power

Larger load carrying capability

Cons

Mid-drive motor instead of ultra mid-drive

Might be too big for some riders

The Apex has plenty of juice and power to haul everything you need in and out of the woods. It comes in two power options (750w and 1000w), but the 1000w bike allows you to haul heavier loads than other competitors. With a 325-pound capacity, this bike can handle tree stands, base camp gear, coolers, meat, and much more.

Despite its mid-drive motor, the Apex handles steep hills like a champ even when it’s loaded with weight. The bike’s load hauling ability also comes from a new pannier rack system that allows for a variety of options for packing all your gear. You can customize your own system to best fit your needs with some really slick options like rifle racks, rod holders, bags, and carts and trailers for hauling deer or elk. And the bike’s inverted fork design also helps achieve greater stability when you’re hauling insanely heavy loads.

Greg Godfrey

Even the best impulse buyers might think twice before pulling the trigger on an electric bike. So you’ll definitely want to research them before buying one. If you’re not sure what to look for, here are a few things to consider:

Budget

Electric bikes range in price from just under $1,000 to almost $10,000. Everyone has a different budget, so you’ll want to consider yours, as well as what features you get at each price point and whether it’s worth saving to buy a more expensive option or buying a cheaper one that does everything you need.

Distance and Battery Life

Most electric bikes have more than enough battery life for multiple trips, especially if you’re not traveling that far. However, if you’re hunting out west and consistently covering double digit miles per day, consider a bike like the Rambo Megatron, which has dual batteries and almost double the distance rating than other competitors.

Load Hauling

Does the bike you’re considering include racks or at least the option to add them? If you’re packing in one of the best hang-on tree stands, extra layers, or even camping gear, you’ll want the ability to pack in everything you need in minimal trips. If you use minimal gear and just have a bowhunting backpack, multiple racks might not be a big concern. But even if you take a minimalist approach, you’ll still need something to haul out your game like a cart or rack.

Bike Size

I spoke with avid deer hunter and saddle hunting guru Greg Godfrey, who has owned a number of electric bikes over the last decade. He says that bike size should be a huge consideration when you’re looking to buy one.

“I’m not a very big guy,” he says. “I’m 5 feet 7 inches, so when I upgraded to one of the bigger bikes on the market, I found it to be too big. I ultimately landed on the Backcou Mule with the step-thru frame and 24-inch tires. The step-thru frame is much easier to deal with on tight trails and gnarly terrain.”

Godfrey recommends that riders of all sizes consider the step-thru frames and smaller size tires because they’re easy to maneuver on tight trails or with unexpected hazards.

Reasons to Buy an Electric Bike for Hunting

You won’t be tired and sweaty when you get to your spot

You can go further and access more hunting ground

No human odor and ground scent left on the trail

Minimal noise allows you to ride to base of your best tree stands or blinds

No gas fumes to stink up your hunting gear

Haul more gear with ease
